Darwin
The capital and the largest city in the Northern Territory of Australia, Darwin was first discovered by the HMS Beagle who sailed into the region’s harbour in September 1839. John Clements Wickham, the ships first officer, had once named the region “Port Darwin” to commemorate Charles Darwin, the known author of the book “On the Origin of Species”. Only in the year 1911 did the city renamed into Darwin. While the city was established in 1869, its first inhabitants were the indigenous people of Larrakia.
The city’s economy which also produces careers for the locals greatly relies on the mining industry. Their mineral deposits include gold, zinc, bauxite and manganese. Energy productions of oil and natural gas have also given a large contribution for the city’s financial state.
Moreover, Darwin’s major employers also include the tourism industry as well as its military presence. Because the metropolitan have risen up as among the favourite vacation destination, many attractions and landmarks have now employ work labourers. Military presence, on the other hand, has also played a significant role in the economy. It is said that the Australian Army and many other armies established in the city have increased the city population and work force over the years.
